This research tested the effectiveness of critical thinking and foundations in English after they were integrated in a college freshman English course. Because many students spoke languages other than English, there could be a language barrier holding back those students' success. The participants were two English instructors, who answered questions about the effectiveness of critical thinking in freshman English, and approximately forty freshmen who participated in a pretest, treatment, and posttest. An interview followed after the posttest for students to provide feedback on their experience. A mixed design was used, which included a case study and quasi-experimental nonequivalent forms. The researcher used case study to collect data by interviewing participants and quasi-experimental nonequivalent forms to collect data by testing students. The testing results confirmed that critical thinking and foundations in English were effective concepts that could enhance the freshman students' knowledge. The students' knowledge could be improved not only in the freshman classrooms but also in their overall academic courses.
